ARTIST MAI DUY MINH (1976) – THERE ONCE WAS A “SPATIAL COMPLEX”

To most Vietnamese art lovers, Mai Duy Minh is surely not an unfamiliar name. When referring to Mai Duy Minh, we usually promptly call to mind the grand scenic paintings with large layout, and human figures drifting in surreal space filled with illusory light and haunting yellow colour. Dedicated to using classical oil painting techniques from preceding virtuosos before integrating his own aesthetic and perfectionistic elements, Minh's paintings are often meticulous to every detail. Each painting is a distinctive tale about what he has witnessed in his life and, at the same time, a reflection on the harmony between his inner mind and the outer world, as he once shared: “I paint what exists inside my body and my heart, and my artistic mind-set is my whole being.”
It can be said that Mai Duy Minh is one of the most successful artists pursuing Realism in Vietnam. Renowned for his creations that perfectly synthesize Realism and Surrealism, and well-trained classical oil painting techniques, not many people might have recalled that Minh once held a contemporary art exhibition named “Spatial Complex” in 2002 (sponsored and hosted by Atena Gallery). That was Minh’s first solo exhibition, which marked a chapter of dedicating himself to Abstract (and might be the only one) in his artistic career.
The exhibition had built a winning reputation and attracted certain attention of Vietnamese art lovers in the open-door period. Artist Dang Quy Khoa commented: “The oil paintings presented in the exhibition […] have expressed the empathy with life, not only by means of visual instinct but also through the restlessness of a passion filled with individual characteristics, the questions about the ongoing life enveloped in tumultuous thoughts, and the contrast between transparency and opaqueness in reality.” These works incorporate the dimensional structure between "formed" and "formless", which constructs "a chaotic and multi-layered spatial complex, interwoven from objective images turning inward (finding answers from yourself by way of retrospection and introspection), seeming to be floating along the painter in the multidimensional virtual reality space” with “translucent but melancholic colours”.
“Mademoiselle”, “Danse” and a few other works that were displayed in the exhibition “Spatial Complex” now belong to the collection of Atena Gallery. This is the fruition of Mai Duy Minh’s first and only odyssey with Abstraction, which Atena Gallery would like to kindly invite you all to come and enjoy.
